And I still have no idea what I want or even what type of car it'll be.

1973 Imperial LeBaron.
Note: Surprisingly cheap, if you add on a few thousand a year in gas.

Since no info on these variables I advise on purchasing a Ferrari LaFerrari in Ferrari Red

And once you've figured it out, it will change again.
In the last year I've gone from an e90 335i sedan, to a new S4, to a not-yet-released V60, to a G8 GT, and now I'm fixed on a first gen CTS-V...

I was thinking something more along the lines of a Hot Rod Unlimited drag car. I think having a 6 second street car would be pretty cool.

I like that!
But maybe he wants something with exposed headers? Also, you can never go wrong with a full size spare or two.

DROOL. Exposed headers are the shit. So are exposed full sized spares.
That is one sick ride

Whichever provides me the better deal. I think sometimes with factory backing, you can get a much better deal on a new car.

Whoa that's a lot of changes!
What year was the E90? AT or MT? Standard suspension or sport?
How does the S4 compare? Do you like the S4 better or miss the turbo I6 goodness?
Very curious because I've owned tons of bimmers but yet to have an Audi.

No sorry! I never owned any of these, just cars I wanted to get next. Still stuck with my civic for now, but I always like to have a car in mind "on deck"

And BTW while I don't have an E90 335i I think it's a great choice. I know the early years had some issues but whatever. You can get them used for cheap, and it's a lotta car.

You should try selling it a a Tesla stockholder meeting. I hear they like grossly overpaying for kinda-cool companies.

That would be awesome. If only my company was considered even kind of cool to Silicon Valley...
We should venture into building components for electric cars and get snapped up by them

Yeah it was the maintenance issues that scared me. I figured my best option would be a 2011 with the N55, but then I thought it would be too old by the time I got it. I'm not feeling the F30, and a new S4 would be too expensive. I'm not sure how I feel about the new Volvo wagon yet. Then I realized I can get something bigger with an American v8 for around $20k, so that's where I'm at today...

How many miles a week do you commute to work/school? That's the big variable to me. If you drive a lot the fuel savings from the N55 might pay for the maintenance of it. If you're not driving a lot then you can't go wrong with a N/A American V8. I haven't researched the reliability of the current S4.
A 2011 335i would be a safe bet. Who cares if it's older by the time you get it? You could fine a low-mileage one and buy an extended warranty and maintenance plan. You'll get it for such a good price that you'll be able to pay for that stuff and still get a much better deal than a new car. Depreciation is the biggest killer in any car purchase. Buy one that's already gone through the steepest part of the depreciation curve and everything else pays for itself.
I almost buy a 2011 335i. But then I went nuts and got a 2011 M3 sedan instead. The gas mileage is just a teeny bit worse ;)

Nice! My commute to work is less than 9 miles round trip, so fuel economy isn't going to be a concern for my next car. Maybe I'll look into m3's too!

9 miles round trip! That's awesome! And exactly what mine is too now that I moved closer to work. My V8 went from being a wallet killer to an awesome creator of sound and fury.
I also have a 2004 E46 M3 with only 35,000 miles on it for sale if you're interested. I bought it before buying the new house then spent more on the house than I planned. So far I've only told Opponauts about it because I don't have to sell it right away. I want it to be purchased by an enthusiast who will love it. And it would be cool to see pics of it on Oppo :)

I wish! I'm probably a year away from actually getting anything, plus I really need a sedan. I did the opposite of you, I bought a house for a little more than I planned first and now I'm dying for a fun car. Good luck with the sale.

I realized right after my last comment that I had forgot that you were not ready to buy a car yet. Was driving to pick stuff up and thought "oh yeah...". Thanks for the good wishes. Funny that when I got home I read a text from an Opponaut that has seen the car saying he just got a new job so he might be able to buy it.
Bummer there was no E46 M3 sedan. They are at the bottom of their depreciation curves right now. But an E90 335i (or even M3) would be an awesome choice. And if you decide to be super responsible you could get an E90 328i instead. I know it's not a ton of power but they are still really fun to drive if they have an MT and the sport package. And no turbos means cheaper long term ownership costs.
You were smart to buy the house first. I shouldn't have bought the E46 M3 when I was looking for a house. I got frustrated that I couldn't get approved for the type of house I wanted so I bought the car to make myself feel better (bad habit, haha). Then a month later I got approved by a different mortgage company for twice the limit I had before. Pretty funny how the underwriter for the 2nd company had such a different way of looking at risk.

I have about until income tax comes in to make my decision. So far I've narrowed it down to 4WD full-size truck. Unless a really nice Town Car or Forester or Mustang GT comes along for the right price and, oh hey Focus SVTs cost how little now? Yeah man, it's a fucking struggle.

I wouldn't search for anything specific (unless you're trying to hunt down your dream car). There are probably plenty of great cars out there that you may have forgotten existed. Between now and zero hour just watch your local listings, as well as other cars on the road and make a mental note of anything that catches your eye!

That's basically what I've decided to do. Plus, there's a whole lot of good things coming out over the next year. It's just gonna expand the search and make it harder to narrow down now.
